The Physics of Car Collisions

The Physics of Car Collisions

Abstract

While car collisions are certainly a scary scene, having knowledge about the physics involved with them could reduce the terror. In my research, I will be explaining four key concepts highlighted in car collisions, including linear momentum, impulse, inertia, and collisions. Beginning with inertia, I will remind you of Newton's Laws of Motion and express the effects of inertia on the passenger during a car collision. I will also add the significance of the application of impulse when talking about inertia. I then describe the different types of collisions, giving direct examples of each in the context of car collisions. Building immediately off collisions, I will evaluate linear momentum, its principles, and its application to the conservation of energy in collisions. Knowing and understanding these simple principles of physics is vital not only for your own safety (and your cars!), but for the safety of all those around you. All information found in my research came from numerous sources and can be found in the "Works Cited" page, listed above.

  1. Well-written abstract. You really got me hooked. Also, to make your paper and slides available to people, you could click share & use a shareable link. I don't know if it works, but, it's worth a try.

  2. Great project James. Your paper is very focused and gave a lot of information on the subjects we learned about this year. You were able to relate this to something that unfortunately happens everyday, and showing us more about safety. I especially like how you related this to Newtons Laws.

  3. Car collisions are indeed scary! It was very eye opening to see how they impact our cars.

  4. Amazing work. Really, a job well done! This is great to see and actually visualize.

  5. This project really hit me hard. I was watching a movie where 27 people were in a really long car, and they crashed and died. Their children all became orphans and had to eat peasant food. Thanks to your project, I'll make sure to do as much as possible to prevent crashes (and orphans).

  6. Great job! Car accidents are scary for sure. This definitely gives me more knowledge about them!

  8. Nice work, we learned a little about collisions during the school year but your research has put it into a real world example that is very easy to understand!
